A 33-year-old former babysitter received probation Thursday in a case where a prosecutor said an 18-month-old boy had duct tape put over his mouth and around his hands so that they appeared to be in a praying position.

A picture of the taped-up boy — in which he appeared red-faced and crying — was sent by text message to his parents, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Amyx said.

Although the child didn’t appear to be injured, he had medical issues and difficulty breathing, which figured into the misdemeanor child endangerment charges against the former baby sitter and another person, Amyx said.

A group of teenagers who participated in what appeared to be a fake robbery at a northeast Wichita Subway restaurant this week were apparently playing a dangerous “game” called Urban Skittles, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

Wichita police said the incident occurred Monday morning when a young man walked into the restaurant in the 3200 block of North Rock Road, put his hand in his pocket and ordered everyone to the floor. The man and two people with him left without taking any money.

A statement from the District Attorney’s Office said the game originated in England and is played by a youth or group of youths who run into a random business and order everyone to the floor as if they are committing a robbery. The youths then count the number of people on the floor before leaving.

The underlying argument Thursday in the case against Todd Puetz, the once highly successful Garden Plain football coach, focused on the question of whether he thought he was meeting a 15-year-old girl for sex.

After listening to both sides, District Judge Ben Burgess said the testimony brought by the prosecution showed probable cause to believe that Puetz was responding to an advertisement that offered sex. Burgess also said that after an undercover detective told Puetz by phone three or four times that she was 15, it’s reasonable for prosecutors to argue that when he showed up at the site of the undercover sting, he expected to have sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Burgess said he found enough evidence to send the former high school coach to an Aug. 6 trial on child sex-related charges.
