Crime Commission, Crime Stoppers Announce Guns ‘n Hoses Boxing Tournament
The Wichita Crime Commission and Crime Stoppers of Wichita/Sedgwick County today announced the first-ever Guns ‘n Hoses Wichita Amateur Boxing Tournament. The event, featuring law enforcement officers versus firefighters, is a fundraising project for Crime Stoppers of Wichita/Sedgwick County.
“The funds raised by Guns ‘n Hoses Wichita will go a long way toward helping Crime Stoppers continue to offer rewards for information leading to the arrest of criminals,” said Galen Davis, chairman of the Crime Stoppers board of directors.
“We’re very excited about this fun event,” said Crime Commission President Paul Masterson. “Guns ‘n Hoses Wichita will give firefighters and officers a chance to win the annual traveling trophy that will be awarded to one side each year. This is a program that has been very successful in other cities. There’s already great enthusiasm for the tournament here in Wichita.”
The boxers competing in the Guns ‘n Hoses Wichita tournament represent five different agencies: the Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Fire Department, Sedgwick County Fire Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol. All of the boxers are required to undergo three months of boxing training and physical conditioning in order to ensure their safety in the ring. The event is sanctioned by USA Boxing, the United States of America’s Olympic-style boxing authority.
So far, more than 40 law enforcement officers and firefighters have begun training for the tournament. Tournament planners will schedule between 15 and 20 bouts on the evening of the tournament which will last approximately two-and-one-half hours. Each bout will consist of three one-minute rounds with one minute intervals in between each round.
The Guns ‘n Hoses Wichita event will take place at the Beech Activity Center, 9710 E. Central, on Friday, April 27, 2012. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with boxing beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets to the event may be purchased online at www.GunsNHosesWichita.org, by contacting the Crime Commission offices at 316-267-1235, or by email at info@GunsNHosesWichita.org. General admission tickets are priced at $25. Reserved seat tickets are priced at $100 and $125.
Sponsors for the event include Overhead Door/Aero Fence, Journal Broadcast Group and KAKE-TV.
